Comparison
of data between conventional industrial ceiling fans, Wickerbills, and the
new POWERFOILTM, including efficiencies (cfm/w) cubic feet per
minute:

Temperature
differentials which naturally exist between the floor and the ceiling of
large buildings can result in differences of moisture and humidity at
various levels, which can cause damage to sensitive packaging and
products. A single 20' diameter Big Ass ceiling fan is designed to
circulate air over an area of 15,000 to 20,000 square feet, and can be
effectively utilized even in buildings with ceiling heights exceeding 45
feet. The low velocity, steady breeze produced by the Big Ass ceiling fan
provides an effective temperature reduction ranging from 6-8 degrees F.
Practically speaking, due to their size and unique airfoil blade design,
Big Ass Fans simply provide MORE air movement for MORE
space.
The
patented Big Ass Fan employs ten airfoils to move a massive column of air
at a relatively slow speed. The Big Ass Fan provides 25+ times the
airflow of the standard industrial ceiling fan, blanketing an area of
up to 20,000 square feet with a gentle wind. A 20’ diameter fan turning
at speeds of between 50-60 rpm moves almost 125,000 cfm of air, which
creates a breeze of about 3.0 mph (250-280 fpm). The key to the big
fan’s effectiveness lies in its unique foil design.

The foil design
shape of the Big Ass Fan is essentially that of a sailplane wing, long and
narrow, with a high aspect ratio. These long, extruded aluminum wings are very
efficient, and being hollow, they are relatively lightweight. In order to
maximize its performance the fan has 10 airfoils, each of which weighs about
1.25 pounds per foot. When operating at normal speeds, the airfoils provide
about 100 pounds of lift. The Big Ass Fan produces a laminar flow of
air over the foil, which helps to provide quiet, efficient operation. Despite
its size, all the fans are driven by a 1 hp motor. In keeping with its energy
efficient design, the fan uses a cycloid gear reducer that is not only
very compact, but also provides almost frictionless power transmission.
Revolving
slowly, the great fan pushes a wide cylindrical column of air that produces a
horizontal floor jet when it reaches the ground. This wall of air radiates in
all directions away from the center of the fan. The depth of the floor jet is
determined by the velocity of the downward-moving air and by the diameter of
the fan. In order to provide effective cooling, it must be deep enough to
immerse people in its breeze. In the case of the 20’ diameter fan, the floor
jet is about nine feet deep. The Big Ass Fan is a rare combination of size and
economy. A single 20’diameter fan requires only 440 watts of power to
operate. The result is an average operating cost of less than five cents an
hour.
Big Ass Fans
therefore offer a simple, low-cost approach to keeping big industrial spaces
comfortable.
At
the Floor
The unique patented airfoil design of the Big Ass Fan provides a massive, low
speed column of air which improves conditions within both large and small
manufacturing facilities.
Summer Cooling
During summer months, a Big Ass Fan helps cool an area by increasing the amount of air circulation within a facility. The fan "cools," as does any fan, by increasing the rate at which perspiration is evaporated from the surface of the skin. This can be a powerful effect. For example, empirical studies over the past 80 years (including, most recently, those at the ASHRAE-sponsored lab at Kansas State University) show that in a space that is 80 degrees F, the operation of ceiling fans can make a person feel as though the workspace is as much as 8 degrees cooler. The advantages of using Big Ass Fans to make workers feel cooler are: (1) the low fan speed creates an air current that is not disruptive (2) the large size of the fans means that the workers on the floor can really feel the air (3) the air movement is felt over a large area, not just directly under the fans.
Winter Destratification
It is not uncommon on a cold winter day to have a temperature differential from ceiling to floor of more than 15 degrees F in a building with a ceiling height of 30 feet.
Rotating at 1/3 to 1/2 speed for winter operation, the Big Ass Fan pushes heated air down from the ceiling of a building to recover and re-circulate heated air to the lower levels (destratification) which leads to lower heating costs. If, for instance, there is only a 10 degree F temperature difference in a building from ceiling to floor, the fans, installed at a height of 26 feet, can provide a potential savings of close to 30%. The higher the temperature differences between the floor and the ceiling, the greater the savings.
